A Goal Without a Date is Just a Wish

AGoal Without a Date is Just a Wish

Can anyone tell you not to do something when you set your mind to it? Why not stop dreaming and make it official with a date?

A lot of people say, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” My philosophy is, “A goal without a date in just a wish.” There’s nothing wrong with wishing, but when you set a goal with a firm date it makes you more likely to achieve that goal. Even if that goal is personal, professional or spiritual, it forces you to focus harder on accomplishing that goal. Think about setting a goal like someone sets a wedding date; now would you want to want to pass your wedding date without results. ?

Again, when you make plans to do something and you really set your mind to do it, can anyone stop you? So, why should your goals and dreams be any different? Even if you are not in a position to financially achieve them? Step out on faith and pick a date; know that what you're doing—or what you’re trying to do—is going to pay off.

I don’t know it all, but I have been through some situations in my life that have made me an expert on goal setting. I was not always the best at setting dates for my goals, I just knew at some point I was going to accomplish something…LOL. The joke is on me because the minute I realized how much time I wasted dreaming, setting firm dated became my best friend.

Let’s not even start on dreams. I knew that I wanted to be a successful small business owner that would help other people start business to strengthen the community. Oh, I started a business 20 years ago, went on to graduate college with my bachelor’s in business, then got my EXMBA. Instead of focusing on making my business successful, I played it safe working as a Customer Service Agent. I have a variety of jobs over the years, Receptionist, Customer Service Manager, Office Manager, etc., which trained me and made me want to focus on the business. So how somewhere it was always put o the back burner. Don’t get me wrong it nothing wrong with these jobs or even working for others, but if I was driven enough to get up and go to work to build other dreams and goals, why not enough for myself?

Here’s why: I was not incompetent or couldn't find a better job. I was just too scared to step out on faith and focus on my business. Again, I started a business about twenty years ago, yet, instead of focusing on my goals, I worked my entire life playing it safe. All while helping others build their goals and dreams. Always making sure I had a backup plan to be able to provide for my family, I have taken very low-income jobs just to have a roof over my kids’ heads. It nothing wrong with the safe road, but for me to you…..DON'T DO IT TOO LONG!!!!!!

Of course, I am by no means saying that you should quit your job and work on your business—unless you want to. I realized that I have experienced minimal growth in my business for a few reasons:

  1. I treated the business like a hobby, not giving in it the proper attention.

  2. I worked jobs to have a steady income and paid more attention to other people goals and dreams instead of my own.

  3. I made excuses for why I was taking those jobs, which was well they will help me be better at my business.

I realized that if I was going to stop making excuses for why I was or was not doing things, my heart conditions and desires had to change. The key to that for me, was including Jehovah in the plan. I have faith in Jehovah, and His promises for the New World are very strong. Not just because Jehovah promises that He knows what we need and everything we need will be added as long as we keep seeking first His kingdom and its righteousness (Matthew 6:32, 33), but because I trust in Him completely. I want a measure of joy in my life to be able to accomplish his will and work my business, which will give me purpose. I realize by playing it safe my whole life, I was not fully trusting in Jehovah. IT STOPS NOW!!!!!!

Life is hard, we all make mistakes. As you work towards your goals, don’t get discouraged about the tough decisions you might have to make to accomplish your goals. I don't regret any of the decisions that I've made throughout my life because it has molded me into the strong, confident, and independent person that I am now. Nevertheless, I am disappointed with the roadblocks I've put in place to delay my goals.

As part of human nature, we do what we are; so, if you’ve always been independent you will always be independent. Remember no one can completely survive alone, sometimes you have to depend on others to help you accomplish your goals. I know it is not always easy depending on others, but it has to be done.

Although this might be slightly off topic

I’ve learned from my study of the Bible that building trust is very important and vital. Being dependent on people is how we build trusting relationships. If we do not allow people to become trustworthy, how can you ever build trust in them? (Read the Article “Trustworthiness”)

When I look back on my life, I think about all the times I’ve told people, I don’t need you, I want you.” It sent a mixed message that made people feel unappreciated. The fact of the matter is we need people to help us get through our daily lives and to help us accomplish our goal. There isn’t anything that compares to having a support system of friends and family who loves you unconditionally.

I have a few friends that didn’t have the best relationship with their parents and I can’t relate because I had a loving and caring mother. Sure, we’ve had our fair share of shouting matches, but what mother and daughter don’t? (No, I’m not condoning fighting with your mother. I'm just saying that it happens.) Despite this, she was my best friend—my ride or die—until she died in September of 2017. My dad wasn't very active in my life growing up. I felt lost and I pushed people away out of fear of getting hurt. I have allowed that to dictate how I treated people. When you put yourself in a situation where you push people away, one day you’ll wake up and realize that it’s just YOU. That is the loneliest feeling in the world. Once again quoting Sophia from The Color Purple, "Don't do it, Miss Celie."

Now, to get back on topic (LOL).

The moral of the story is to set goals with a date, so you can focus on achieving your goals and dreams. Even if the date changes several times, keep setting a new date. If you keep saying “I’m going to do it. I’m going to do it,” before you know it, ten years will have passed by and you’re still in the same place.

If you want to do better, be better and start by setting goals with dates!!!!!
